Bhairavagad Fort !! You should know about the Fact of India
Bhairavagad is a fort in the Satara district of the Indian state of Maharashtra . There are total five forts named Bhairavagad in Maharashtra, this is one of them. The rest are: Bhairavagad of Moroshi ( Thane district), Bhairavagad of Naradva near Kankavali ( Sindhudurg district), Bhairavagad of Kothala, Bhairavagad of Shirpunje (both Ahmednagar district).
The fort is situated on the ridge of a hill that juts out from the Sahyadri range, hence the fort is not visible from a distance. Dense forest is the main attraction here. Since it has been declared as a forest sanctuary, all the villages here have been relocated and settled outside the forest, so there is very little human movement in this area. Since the sanctuary around Bhairavagad was declared as a "Tiger Reserve" in 2012, the dirt road from Helwak to Bhairavagad, Patharpunj (and Prachitgad) has been posted by the forest department and cannot be accessed without prior written permission from the forest department.
Hill of Bhairavagad Fort
Bhairavagad fort is situated on the hill in front of the temple. To reach there one has to take the path that descends from the left side of the temple. On reaching the hill of the fort, there is a fortified tower and there is a large square cave carved into the rock at the top. The watchmen who used to sit for watch in earlier times must have been able to sit here and keep a long view. This cave must have protected them from rain and wind.
A little further from the cave and round the hill is a dilapidated south-facing doorway with a bastion on the side of the valley. After passing through this door, there is another south-facing door on the slope of the front hill. This door is also dilapidated.
Gadmatha is so narrow that one can walk around the fort in 2 hours. From the fort, one can see the dense forest of Koyne spread far and wide.
Ways To Reach Fort Via Durgwadi
The Chiplun - Derwan -Durgwadi bus departs from Chiplun at 8 am and reaches Durgwadi in one hour. The path leads directly to the fort through the forest above Durgwadi village. It takes 3 hours to reach the fort by this route. The path is straight but tiring. The path coming from Gavhare-Gowalpati village also comes through this road. There is no water anywhere on the way. It takes three and a half hours to reach Bhairavagad from the base.
